I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of readers here agree, regardless of partisanship, that privacy from the state is an important matter.
Unfortunately, I am having trouble figuring out why. I completely agree with the idea - I don't want my life under public scrutiny, or even under "secure" governmental scrutiny without my permission. But why is this important? I have a hard time coming up with my real motives for wanting privacy. Every time I try, I end up with plain old selfish motivations, which isn't good enough to satisfy the rational side of me.
Can some other folks help me out here? What are your reasons for desiring privacy? Is there a good psychological or sociological argument for personal privacy?
