After reading a lot of interesting ideas here at DKos about personal liberty and privacy, I've noticed that most people aren't against sacrificing privacy or liberty when it impacts negatively the liberty of others.
If that's the case, how could anyone have a child and maintain a clear conscience? Environmentally speaking, having a child is possibly the worst thing you can do for the planet, and hence is the worst possible negative impact you could have for everyone on the planet (unless you're slated to be the next CEO at ExxonMobil, maybe).
Why don't more people opt for adoption? There are countless children out there without families, but still people want to have "their own". Is there any explanation for this other than genetic selfishness? Do our genes really dictate our actions so much that they overwhelm all else when it comes to having babies?
I'd really like to hear from people who have chosen in either way - what are your motivations for having your own child, what are your motivations for adopting?
